At Artienda we are SO excited to be working with the immense talent that is James Wilson. His contemporary art is unique, thought-provoking, and impactful. It works beautifully in large print format within a variety of interior design scenarios including art for offices, art for restaurants, and art for hotels. We asked him to give us a biography on who he is and what inspires him.

In his own words: I am 24 years of age - born in Sydney, Australia - and now reside full-time on the North Devon coast of England. In 2019, I completed a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Graphic Communication at Bath School of Art & Design. Throughout my time in Bath I grasped fully how to communicate my ideas, concepts and thoughts graphically, through image and typography. Having grown up in rural England and Australia with a huge passion for travel, I have created a unique trademark through art, graffiti and curated spaces.

James continues: ”The work I produce is colourful, powerful, informative and figurative, creating scenes with imaginary communities through characters and figures using mediums such as spray paint, water-based paint, markers, and rollerball pens. This combination of bright colours and characters creates stimulating scenes which can be used to great effect in curated spaces. I have always been interested in trashy/messy work within illustration, graffiti, art, and scrawlings as it's invigorating and done fast. Alternatively, I’ve been deeply inspired by architectural drawings that create a perspective of the future. Illustrators, architects, and artists such as Saul Steinberg, Esso, Blok.102, Craig Costello, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe have all envisioned what can be created. I love to to cross over mediums of Art & Design.”

Thoughts On This New Collection

This body of work represents the perspective of a utopia shown through a combination of illustration and colour. All characters and figures have been composed with a selected colour palette to contrast and complement one another. The motive for the collection was to illustrate a cartoonish world in which we are living in today with a nitty twist approach. This outlook for the work enabled the results to be quick and rough, creating a raw graphic aesthetic.
